Catered halls
The Founder’s Building was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. It is now home to undergraduate students and also contains a dining hall, café, chapel and picture gallery. Student rooms in Founder's come in different sizes and with different features. There are 56 single rooms, 250 single rooms with a washbasin, 103 large rooms and 22 shared rooms, where two students share one room.

What will be in my room?
There’s furniture provided for you in the room, but you’ll have to bring a few bits yourself.
Due to the historic nature of the building, not all rooms have a washbasin.
We provide:
- single bed (190cm x 90cm) with storage
- wardrobe
- drawers
- desk and lamp
- desk chair
- some rooms have washbasins
- mattress protector
You’ll need to bring:
- sheets
- single duvet cover
- pillowcases
- towels
- duvet and pillows

WiFi is available in all rooms.
Food and drink
Founder’s is a catered Hall and your rent includes one meal per day, plus a weekly catering allowance of £25, which will be added to your Student ID card. This allowance can be used at various cafés and dining halls around campus. It resets every week, cannot be carried over or used at the SU shop or for alcohol.
Our dining halls cater to most dietary requirements (e.g. vegan and halal). If you need assistance finding an option that suits you on the menu, just speak to a member of staff at the food counter and we will be able to assist you.
Pantries
Even though this hall is catered pay-as-you-go, you’ll have access to a pantry. Pantries are a kitchen type area designed for you to make drinks and light snacks and are shared by up to 24 students.
We provide:
- small work surface and sink
- microwave
- kettle and toaster
- larder refrigerator
You need to bring:
- cups
- plates and bowls
- cutlery and other utensils
- washing-up materials and tea towels
The pantries are professionally cleaned weekly, but it’s also your responsibility to keep the shared areas clean and tidy.
Can I bring my car?
No, you can’t bring your car with you to your Halls of Residence. You can bring your car to campus for up to one hour, but if you stay any longer you’ll get a parking fine.
All mail arrives at the Main College Post Room and is distributed to the appropriate Halls of Residence within 24 hours. In Founder’s Hall, letters you receive will be placed in the pigeon holes in George Eliot reception foyer for collection. If you receive a parcel or item needing a signature, we’ll email you to let you know that it’s arrived and is ready for collection from the George Eliot post room. Remember to bring valid ID when you come to collect your mail.
Please make sure your post is addressed using your full name, (as it appears on your student ID card, rather than any nicknames or abbreviated names), hall address and room number. Otherwise we may not be able to get your mail to you.

Laundry
The laundry facilities for Founder’s Hall are located near reception.
We recommend using the mobile app.
College security
Security officers are available on campus 24-7. The main security office is in the Founder's Building.
Officers monitor campus activities on CCTV and with frequent patrols responding to any fire alarm activations and disturbances on campus, as well as ensuring that areas are safe and secure.
Hall Reception
Each hall has a reception point where you can report maintenance problems, top up your Student ID Card, and get advice or help.
George Eliot reception is the Halls reception for students living in Founder’s Hall. This is located on the ground floor of the George Eliot Centre, Block D.
Opening times:
- Monday to Friday: 8am-8pm
- Weekends: 9am-5pm

Developments on Campus
We are committed to maintaining and improving our student accommodation to ensure a comfortable and safe living environment. As part of this commitment, we will be carrying out essential maintenance and compliance work in internal areas of our halls while students are in residence.
