What first attracted you to Royal Holloway?
Prior to entering University, my perspective on viable careers in music was limited to just two paths: becoming a performer or a teacher. This belief heavily influenced my decision to choose RH over other universities, as their flexible approach allowed students to select instrumental teachers from external institutions on a freelance basis at the time. This allowed me to work with a high level instrumental teacher at academy level while also attending the strong academic programme that RH provided available in house allowing me to tackle the even hybrid that I was looking for at the time. My aspiration to enhance my saxophone technique and study under a professor from an academy/ conservatory while still obtaining a university degree was fulfilled by RH, offering me the best of both worlds.
What did Royal Holloway teach you / How did Royal Holloway help prepare you for your career?
Beyond the prestigious music degree, good industry connections, and valuable memories, RH provided me with exposure to a diverse setting beyond the confines of the lecture room. Interacting with a vibrant international community introduced me to various cultures, music genres, but more importantly opened up collaborations and creativity while the on-campus work opportunities unveiled career avenues I hadn't previously considered, furnishing me with the confidence and experience to venture into entrepreneurship and work further into the music & events industry.
Please describe your career path since graduating
Since my university days, I've been engaged in various roles, starting with part-time work at RH Students' Union which has equipped me with strong early-career foundations. Progressing through the ranks, I eventually stepped into a graduate role position at RoyalHolloway immediately after completing my MMus. Alongside, I pursued further training in marketing and events at the Chartered institute of Marketing, volunteered with arts organisations, and performed at numerous private events as a saxophonist. As my interest in the field of live events grew, I found myself leading the Events & Entertainment Department at RHSU for a few years after several promotions which gave me the opportunity to have a positive impact on student life on-campus by producing events reflecting the international community at the University, including the Freshers’ and Summer Balls respectively. Concurrently, I continued performing and applying the skills and knowledge acquired from my professional endeavours to my personal projects. I co-founded three successful startup businesses, and eventually chose to focus on one and exit the others. I am now running Cyndeo Events who focus on Music Curation and Event Consultancy for a number of venues in the Higher Education, high street brands and restaurant chains. Within our agency we proudly represent near enough 100 talented artists who join us in delivering high quality entertainment in all of our partner venues. Favourite moment in my career so far has been the opportunity to stage manage a London Jazz festival show at the Barbican Centre in London for Bobby McFerrin!
